Why do you think the United States and the Soviet Union chose cooperation in space after years of competition?

There is a number of advantages to collaboration instead of competition:

- the results of collaboration are together better, so the space exploration is more efficient
-The two powers don't need to fear what the other one has achieved militarily, as they can ask directly if there is a collaboration.
