The Federalists argued that the democratic process alone would protect our rights. The anti-Federalists wanted direct guarantees of those rights. The Constitution provided for a stronger central government than the weaker Articles of Confederation. It moved the country a little more to the left. The Bill of Rights limitations on what government could do to you made sure that move didn't turn out to be a slippery slope.
