I find subtracting the percents is much easier, it gives you the answer quicker if 20% speak Spanish, then 80% speak English 1000 X .80 = 800 students speak Spanish

First, make the 20% a decimal, making it .2(move the decimal place two times to the right. Then multiply .2 by 1000 to get the number of spanish speaking students, getting 200. Subtract 200 from 1000 to get english speaking students, making the answer to the question 800
