We need to use the number line to find the result of 1-5.

The steps to do this are:

• First start at number 1 in the number line.

• Jump to left five times, becuase we have to subtract 5 to 1.

Graphically this is:

In the picture above you can see the red circle marks the start at number 1, then we jump five times to the left, in yellow, and we reach the number -4 in a green circle. So the result of 1-5 is -4.

So, the Difference is 1-5=-4 and the Addition sentence is -4+5=1.

The Addition sentences is the opposite, you start at -4 and jump to rigth until reach the number 1, the number of jumps is the same to the Difference, 5 jumps.
