How can you use an exponent to represent a number such as 16?

An exponent is the number of times you multiply the base number. Here are examples:
4^(2)⇒4×4=16 -------------------
2^(4)⇒2×2×2×2=16 -------------------
16^(1)⇒16×1 since the 16 is the one so it's just 16
