- You have the following equation:

14 = x - 6

In order to solve the previous equation for x, you first sum 6 both sides of the equation:

14 = x - 6

14 + 6 = x - 6 + 6 simplify

20 = x

20 = x is the same that x = 20. Hence, the anser is x = 20.

- You have the following equation:

4 - (2x + 9) = 11 first, eliminate parenthesis

4 - 2x - 9 = 11 signs inside the parenthesis change because it was preceeded by a minus sign

Next, you simplify similar terms:

-2x - 5 = 11 sum 15 both sides

-2x - 5 + 5 = 11 + 5 simplify

-2x = 16 divide both sides by -2

-2x/(-2) = 16/(-2)

x = - 8

Hence, the answer is x = -8
