the epiglottis is the tube that runs down your throat. when you drink or eat, everything has to go through the epiglottis to get to the stomach

The epiglottis makes sure that whatever goes down your mouth goes down to the corresponding tube, for you have two tubes, each connected to a different system (digestive and respiratory), both equally important.
