Than the length of the longer pieces = 4x - 4

Than the equation becomes

x + 4x - 4 = 11

5x = 11 + 4

5x = 15

`x = (15)/(5)`

x = 3 ft

The length of the longer pieces = 4x - 4

= 4 × 3 - 4

= 12 - 4

= 8 ft
