so a number (x because unknown) divided by 40 (x divided into 40 parts or x/40) has a quotient of 6 with a remainder of 16 (answer=6 with 16 remainder)

remember that remainder is not involved in division, just leftover
x/40=6+16 remainder
to get rid of the fraction, multiply the whole equation by 40 and add the remainder (since it wasn't involved in division)
x=240+16
x=256
check: use calculator/head

number=256
