The way I am reading this is 16=(x/3)-8. In that case, x=72. I hope that's the right way of interpreting this :)

Answer:

The number is 72.

Explanation:

Let x be the number.

We are given that the quotient of a number and 3, less 8, is 16.

Thus, we can write this in the form of equation as:

\displaystyle(x)/(3) - 8 = 16\\\\(x)/(3)-8 +8 = 16 + 8\\\\(x)/(3) = 24\\\\x = 3* 24 = 72

Thus, the number is 72.
