It stimulates the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. This results in the rise of red blood cells which increases the oxygen - carrying capacity of the blood. Since it it regulates red blood production the major function is to

- promote the developement of red blood cells
- Initiate the synthesis of hemoglobin, the molecule within red blood cells that transform oxygen.
