During the reconstruction in the South, racially segregated schools began to emerge under the "Separate but Equal" legal doctrine which was confirmed in the Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision of 1896.

Answer:

African Americans have no access to education before the Civil war. During the reconstruction, it was found that blacks were running a considerable number of small schools despite they were illegal. Further northern aided schools were opened for freedmen. Despite the violence and crimes directed against the freedmen to get an education. There was a considerable rise in their literacy rate.
