36. He had a total of 40 lb of flour, and used 16 for bread, leaving him with 24 lb. 24 divided by 2/3 is 36.

Answer:

He make 36 batches of muffins.

Explanation:

Consider the provided information.

It is given that he used 2/5 of the flour for bread, and he used 16lbs for bread.

Let total amount of flour is x lbs, now convert above statement into mathematical form.

(2)/(5)x=16

(2x)/(5)=16

x=(5* 16)/(2)=(80)/(2)

x=40

Therefore, he bought 40 lbs of flour.

He used 16 lb out of 40.

So for muffins he left with 40-16=24 lbs of flour.

It is given that he used 2/3 lb. For each batch of muffins.

Divide 24 with 2/3 lb.

(24)/((2)/(3))=(24* 3)/(2)

(72)/(2)=36

Hence, he make 36 batches of muffins.
