Actually, I hate to admit but the answer that the genius says is incorrect. The correct answer however is merchants. Land ownership had been the main economic force under feudalism, and land owners were members of the upper class. However, during the age of exploration, Europe's economy was driven by trade. This trade-based economy gave rise to a wealthier middle class of merchants and businessmen.

I am absolutely sure that the members of the middle class which gained power and wealth during this time are land owners. I consider the first option to be the correct one because during the 17th and 18th centuries land sphere incredicly expanded and spreaded all over the Europe. Hope it will help!
