The waitress and hostess at a restaurant share the tips at the end of every shift. Between the two of them, they earn an average of $95 in tips. The waitress takes $55, and the hostess takes $40.

If they continue to earn money at this rate, how much will the waitress receive if they earn $285 at the end of their next shift?

You can use proportions to figure the solution out. Here's how to do it:
When the waitress and hostess earn $95 in total, the waitress takes $55. Now we need to see how much she takes when the two of them earn $285. Here's how to set up the proportion:

55:95 = x:285 (now you cross-multiply)
95x = 55*285
95x = 15,675
x = 15,675/95
x = 165

The waitress will receive $165 at the end of their next shift.
