The students are divided in four categories depending on whether or not they play a sport or an instrument.

a)

To find the total students in the survey, add the four numbers. Let N be the total number of students:

\begin{gathered} N=23+15+18+4 \\ \Rightarrow \\ N=60 \end{gathered}

There are 60 students in that survey.

b)

To find out how many students do not play an instrument, add the numbers in the column "Do not play an instrument". Let I be the number of students who do not play an instrument:

\begin{gathered} I=15+4 \\ \Rightarrow \\ I=19 \end{gathered}

There are 19 students that do not play an instrument.

c)

To find out how many students play a sport, add the numbers in the row "play a sport". Let S be the total number of students who play a sport:

\begin{gathered} S=23+15 \\ \Rightarrow \\ S=38 \end{gathered}

Therefore, there are 38 students that play a sport.
