When ice floats in water, one-eigth of its volume floats above the water level and seven-eight float beneath the water lever. A block of ice placed into an ice chest causes the water in the chest to rise 4cm. The right rectangular chest measures 35 cm by 50 cm by 30 cm high. What is the volume of the block of ice?

If you start by finding the volume of the ice in the water (4cm x 35cm x 50cm) you will find that 7000 cm^3 of the ice is underwater. If 7/8 of the ice is underwater then 1/8 is above water (1000 cm^3) and the total volume of the ice is 8000 cm^3
