You need to do 5/8 because you divide the 5 cups to 8 children.
5/8=0.625
Each child gets 0.625 cups of juice.

To get the result we have to divide number of cups by number of children.
5:8=0.625
0.625 means that each children can get less than 1 cup of juice.
