It helps prepare the muscles for the workout by gently increasing blood flow. It also helps loosen the joints. Warming up also gradually prepares the heart for increase in activity. It can also help prepare you for the workout mentally.

It helps to stretch the muscles, therefore preventing soreness and injury. It also helps get oxygen into the muscles.
