x² - 14x + 45 = 0

Look for two numbers whose sum is -14 and product equal 45

Replace -14x by the numbers

x² - 9x - 5x + 45 = 0

x(x - 9) - 5 ( x - 9) = 0

(x - 9) (x-5) = 0

Either

x - 9 = 0 or x - 5 = 0

x = 9 or x = 5

Hence the correct answer is b.
