In the etching "The sleep of reason produces monsters" by Goga, the regularity of line and shape, creates movement and a frantic rhythm which is used as a metaphor for the nightmarish thoughts, when in dreams searching for reason, the lines are crosshatched and layered to produce darker shadows and contours of the bats, owls and animals behind the sleeping figure, as if a projection of his mindset in dreams.
