we know that

1 lap around the school track is
5/8 mile

so

by proportion

Find how many miles corresponds to
3(1)/(2) laps

3(1)/(2)\ laps=(3*2+1)/(2) =(7)/(2)\ laps

((5/8))/(1) (miles)/(lap)= (x)/((7/2)) (miles)/(lap)\\ \\x=(5)/(8)*(7)/(2)\\ \\ x=(35)/(16)\ miles\\ \\x=2(3)/(16)\ miles

therefore

the answer is

2(3)/(16)\ miles
