genetic variation can be caused by mutation ( which can create entirely new alleles in a population), random mating, random fertilization, and recombination between homologous chromosomes during meiosis ( which reshuffles alleles whitin an organism's offspring).

Answer:

A gene mutations can be defined as the permanent alteration in the sequence of the DNA that makes the gene. Gene mutation may give rise to genetic variations or from the genetic recombination.

These variations are known to alter the gene activity and the function of the protein. These variations in the protein or gene activity give rise to different traits in an organism.
