Why are the latitude lines that run through Australia indicated as "south latitude?" How is the latitude of a location determined? PLEASE REPLY ASAP!

It must have numbers in the square read the top one that the Latitude if u have a map it will tell u .

It's south of the equator. Latitude- I think of it as steps on a ladder. Any lines above the equator are north
