Sarah took the advertising department from her company on a round trip to meet with a potential client. Including Sarah a total of 13 people took the trip. She was able to purchase coach tickets for $250 and first class tickets for $1180. She used her total budget for airfare for the trip, which was $7900. How many first class tickets did she buy? How many coach tickets did she buy?

We have the following:

We can solve the question by means of a system of equations,

where x is coach tickets and y is first class tickets

\begin{gathered} x+y=13\Rightarrow x=13-y \\ 250x+1180y=7900 \end{gathered}

solving for substitution

\begin{gathered} 250\cdot(13-y)+1180y=7900 \\ 3250-250y+1180y=7900 \\ 930y=4650 \\ y=(4650)/(930) \\ y=5 \end{gathered}

now, for x

x=13-5=7

Therefore, in total there are 5 first class tickets and 7 coach tickets
