To solve this problem use the Pythagorean theorem.

hypotenuse^2 = short leg^2 + long leg^2

Substitution

hypotenuse^2 = 12^2 + 13^3

Simplification

hypotenuse^2 = 144 + 169

hypotenuse^2 = 313

Result

hypotenuse = 17.7 rounding

hypotenuse = 18 mm
