Ronaldo is standing by the edge of a circular lake at point A (shown below). He has to get directly to the other side at point B. Instead of walking around the lake from A to B, he decides that he would rather swim. How far must he swim from A to B if the circumference of the lake is 4.71 miles (Use π = 3.14) ?

Ronaldo must swim 1.5 miles from A to B

A line that joins two two points on the circumfrence of a circle passing through the center of the circle is the diameter of the circle. So the length that Ronaldo wants to swim is the diameter of the circle.

From the question, we are given circumfrence of the circle

The equation relating the circumfrence of the circle to the diameter of the circle is given below;

Mathematically;

C\text{ = }\pi\text{ }*\text{ D}

Thus;

4.71 miles = 3.14 * D

D = 4.71/3.14

D = 1.5 miles
