In practice, it is enough to find the common denominator (not necessarily the lowest) by multiplying the denominators: 3 × 6 = 18. In the following intermediate step, it cannot further simplify the fraction result by canceling. In other words - one third minus one sixth = one sixth.

1/3 - 1/6 = 1 * 2 / 3 * 2 - 1/6 = 2/6 - 1/6 = 2 - 1 / 6 = 1/6

I hope this helps! Feel free to rewrite this in your own words!

1/3-1/6
Convert 1/3 to 2/6 so that the numbers can subtract evenly
2/6-1/6
Subtract the numerators but NOT the denominators
Final Answer: 1/6
