The four mental aspects of listening are:
- Paraphrase;
- Summarize;
- Clarify;
- Reflect.
1. Paraphrase.
This is when we rephrase what the other person has said in different words. This allows the other person to focus on what they're saying and indicate if you and they are on the same page.
2. Summarize.
Pointing out key themes confirms and strengthens what you understand of the other person's point of view. It can also help you review the overall progress.
3. Clarify.
This is a very important tool that encourages people to expand their ideas. It also gives you a chance to check what you haven't understood.
4. Reflect.
Reflecting gives the other person a chance to hear what they're saying in a different way and helps them acknowledge their feelings. It also helps them feel that they're understood and that you've been paying attention to them.
