PEMDAS is an acronym for the words parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. Given two or more operations in a single expression, the order of the letters in PEMDAS tells you what to calculate first, second, third and so on

so, simplifying is basically make the expression more simple, less terms,

Let

\begin{gathered} 2\cdot3-5(x+4)=1 \\ \text{Parenthesis} \\ 2\cdot3-5x-20=1 \\ \text{there are not exponents} \\ \text{multiplication} \\ 6-5x-20=1 \\ \text{there is not division} \\ \text{addition}/\text{subtaction} \\ -14-5x=1 \\ to\text{ solve x, add 14 in both sides} \\ -14-5x+14=1+14 \\ -5x=15 \\ \text{divide by -5} \\ (-5x)/(-5)=(15)/(-5) \\ x=-3 \end{gathered}
