Given:

Charge per mile is $3 plus $4 a fixed charge for the tip.

Let, x denote the number of mile.

The given data can be written in the form of equation as,

C=3x+4

Given that, tourist pays $43 for a cab ride.

\begin{gathered} 43=3x+4 \\ 43-4=3x \\ x=(39)/(3) \\ x=13 \end{gathered}

The cab ride was 13 miles.
