Answer: Fraction of money each charity received
=(4)/(15)

He received $225 for his birthday.

Explanation:

Let x denotes the money Mr. Scruggs received for his birthday.

Given : He spent 1/5 of it on dog treats.

i.e. Money he spent on dog treats =
(x)/(5)

Remaining money =
x-(x)/(5)=(5x-x)/(5)=(4x)/(5)

Since he divided the he divided the remainder equally among his 3 favorite charities.

Money each charity received =
(4)/(5)/ 3

=(4x)/(5)*(1)/(3)=(4x)/(15)

Fraction of money each charity received
=(4)/(15)

If he donated $60 to each charity , then

\Rightarrow\ (4x)/(15)=60\\\\\Rightarrow\ x=(60*15)/(4)=15*15=225

∴ He received $225 for his birthday.

The remainder after dog treat is 4/5
On diving amongst 3 charities;
4/5÷3=4/15
4/15 is equivalent to 60
Then 15/15 will be equivalent 15*60/4
= 225 dollars
