In one baseball season, Peter (p) hit twice the number of homeruns that Mark (m) hit. Together they hit 18 homeruns. How many homeruns did each person hit?

Given that in one baseball season, Peter (p) hit twice the number of homeruns that Mark (m) hit. This can be interpreted algebraically as shown below:


p=2m

Also, given that together they hit 18 homeruns. This can be interpreted as shown below:


p+m=18

Substitute p = 2m in the total home runs to know the home runs each person hit as shown below:


\begin{gathered} p+m=18,p=2m \\ 2m+m=18 \\ 3m=18 \\ \text{divide through by 3} \end{gathered}
\begin{gathered} (3m)/(3)=(18)/(3) \\ m=6 \end{gathered}
