Jake is comparing the prices of two laundry service companies. Company A charges $20 per load and an additional $8 as service charges. Company B charges $24 per load and an additional $4 as service charges.

Part A: Write equations to represent Company A's and Company B's total laundry charges for a certain number of loads. Define the variable used in the equations.

Part B: Which company would charge less for 5 loads of laundry? Justify your answer.

Part C: How much money is saved by using the services of Company A instead of Company B to clean 9 loads of laundry?

x = number of loads
company A : 20x + 8
company B : 24x + 4

20x + 8 = 20(5) + 8 = 100 + 8 = 108 (company A)
24x + 4 = 24(5) + 4 = 120 + 4 = 124 (company B)
company A charges less

20x + 8 = 20(9) + 8 = 188
24x + 4 = 24(9) + 4 = 220
220 - 188 = $ 32 bucks is saved by using company A

Answer:

Part A : 20x + 8 and 24x + 4

Part B : Company A charges less and compared to company B.

Part C : Using the services of company A saving is $32

Explanation:

Jake is comparing the prices of two laundry service companies.

Part A:

Company A charges $20 per load and an additional $8 as service charges.

So the expression that represents the charges = 20x + 8

Similarly for company B the expression will be charges = 24x + 4

Here x represents the number of loads of the laundry.

Part B:

In this part we have to compare the charges for 5 loads of the laundry.

Charges of company A : 20x + 8 = 20×5 + 8 = $108

Charges of company B : 24x + 4 = 24×5 + 4 = $124

Therefore, company A charges less.

Part C :

Company A charges for 9 loads = 20×9 + 8 = $188

and company B charges for 9 loads = 24×9 + 4 = $220

Saving by using the services of company A instead of company B

= 220 - 188

= $32
