$x-\ first \ number\\ y-\ second\ number\\\\ x-8=2y\\ x+y-9=14\\\\ x=2y+8\\ x+y=23\\\\ 2y+8+y=23\\ 3y+8=23\ \ \ |subtract\ 8\\ 3y=15\ \ \ |divide\ by\ 3\\ y=5\\\\x=18$ Answer here
