Apostrophes are used to indicate an omission. It is used to show or replaced the missing letter in the word or showing dialect or accent. Apostrophes are very common in creating contractions. Examples like I'm, which is from "I am", Who's from "who is", and aren't from "Are not". It is also used to make words shorter, like for example the word 'cause, from "because". And lastly, showing dialect or accent, like for example, Jo'burg from "Johannesburg.
