ATP is a molecule that has large amounts of energy within its covalent bonds. The part of the molecule that has this property is the three phosphate groups. The energy released by losing the phosphate, to become ADP, is used by the cell in different reactions. The adenine is not as important, suffice to say that there is one molecule of less use call GTP (guanine instead of adenine).
