Torrey has a coin collection from his foreign travels to Sweden and Norway. He has a total of 998 coins. The number of Norwegian coins is 26 fewer than three times the number of Swedish coins. How many coins from each country does he have?

total coins = 998

Let

the swedish coins = x

Therefore,

Norwegian coins = 3x - 26

The coins from each country can be calculated below

\begin{gathered} x+3x-26=998 \\ 4x=998+26 \\ 4x=1024 \\ x=(1024)/(4) \\ x=256 \end{gathered}

Therefore,

\begin{gathered} \text{swedish coins = 256} \\ Norwegian\text{ coins = 3(256)-26 = }768-26=742\text{ } \end{gathered}
