this statement is a compound sentence since it has two independent clauses linked to each other by a linker. how to know? just remove the linkor and read each claue on its own. that'll be:
stephen plays the violin. marta plays the viola.
if the clauses are complete on their own (independent clauses), then the sentence is a compound sentence.
