Answer:

Some mineral resources are referred to as strategic minerals.

Strategic minerals are ones that must be imported into the United States and are used for a variety of industrial purposes. Metals such as uranium, mercury, cobalt, tin, nickel, and magnesium are found in very limited amounts in the United States and are imported from other countries. For example, only half the world's supply of molybdenum, used to produce specialty steels, is found in the United States. Mercury deposits are found in parts of Asia. Tungsten is found in parts of Southeast Asia and Australia. Cobalt is found in parts of Europe and South America. Industry in the United States and the lives that we all live here involve the use of these minerals. This dependency introduces a whole new set of issues as the United States must import these minerals from elsewhere.
