Call the price of a book 'b'. We know that lunch cost $3.25 so let's say
L=3.25 we also know the total is $40. So we can write:

T=L+5b+7
or

40=3.25+5b+7
and then solve for 'b':

29.75=5b

b=(29.75)/(5) = 5.95

A book cost $5.95
