Gothic buildings were designed to be more heavenly with large open spaces. The difference in vaulting and arches allowed the construction of impressive tall designs that supported the increased height of the towers. New design elements allowed for redistribution of weight, so towers would not crush themselves. One of the new elements was the pointed arches: Much more supportive than rounded arches, that also gave the illusion of pointing towards heaven.
