Character(ization)
There are six basic types of fiction elements. The six different types are symbolism, plot, point of view, setting, character, and conflict. When we look at the sentence in the excerpt you provided, what we see is that the author is describing a character’s traits. This type of description is known as direct characterization—where the author blatantly tells readers about his or her character thereby eliminating the need for readers to piece together fragments of information based upon what the character does and says.
