Convert to improper fraction then add together.

2 3/4 yards = 11/4

1 1/2 yards = 3/2

Then convert 3/2 into quarters = 6/4

Then add together 11/4 + 6/4 = 17/4 and convert back to mixed number

17/4 = 4 1/4 yards
