Good evening Ned,

I'm assuming you're talking about the British colonies in North America which would later become the United States.

A big issue that eventually lead to the American revolution was that colonists were not allowed to vote for British parliament, but were still required to pay taxes and such. The colonists saw this as highly unfair, since they saw themselves as still part of the British empire. This lead to their idea that they should not have to pay taxes if they were not allowed to have say in British affairs. No taxation without representation. Britain was stubborn and tried to increase taxes, leading to events like the Boston Tea Party, and eventually the American Revolution.

-Hope this helps!
