Let the cost if 1 shrub = x

The cost of some potting soil for $12.50 and 6 shrubs = $71.00

so,

6\cdot x+12.5=71

solve for x

subtract 12.5 from both sides

\begin{gathered} 6\cdot x+12.5-12.5=71-12.5 \\ 6\cdot x=58.5 \end{gathered}

Divide both sides by 6

\begin{gathered} (6x)/(6)=(58.5)/(6) \\ \\ x=9.75 \end{gathered}

So, the cost of 1 shrub = $9.75
