Using our common denominators, we can convert 1/2 to 4/8, and 1/4 to 2/8. As 2+4 = 6, we can subtract our used olive oil (6/8) from our total (7/8), leaving us with 1/8 a cup olive oil.

Half of eight equals 4, so Tom will lose 4/8 to the salad dressing. one fourth of eight would be 2/8. So 2/8 + 4/8 = 6/8. Now 6/8 subtracted from 7/8 = your answer, 1/8!
