Answer: Jane has a total number of 30 Nickels

Let the number of nickel coins = N

Let the number of quarters be = D

A nickel worth 5 cent

A quarter woth 25 cent

Since, jane had 36 coins and the coins contain both nickel and quarters

Therefore,

N + D = 36----------------- equation 1

0.05N + 0.25D = 3------------- equation 2

These two linear equation can be solve simultaneously by using substitution method

Make D the subject of the formula in equation 1

D = 36 - N

Substitute the value of D into equation 2

0.05N + 0.25(36 - N) = 3

Open the parenthesis

0.05N + 9 - 0.25N = 3

Collect the like terms

0.05N - 0.25N = 3 - 9

-0.2N = -6

Divide both sides by -0.2

-0.2N/-0.2 = -6/ -0.2

N = 30

Therefore, Jane has a total number of 30 Nickels
