If we assign the variable "x" to count the number of votes of the new president and "y" to the number of votes of their opponent, we can create an expression based on the phrase "The new president received 3 votes for every vote of his opponent". This is done below:

x=3\cdot y

Since the new president received 2148 votes, then "x" is equal to that value, if we replace it on the expression above, we should be able to solve for "y".

\begin{gathered} 2148=3\cdot y \\ 3\cdot y=2148 \\ y=(2148)/(3)=716 \end{gathered}
