After surgery a patient has been asked to consume a low Calorie diet. For the first meal a protein bar was consumed containing 25g of carbohydrates, 18 g of protein, and 10 g of fat. For the second meal a banana containing 15 g of carbohydrates and an oatmealcontaining 48 g of carbohydrates, 16 g of protein, and 5 g of fat. If carbohydrates contain 4 Cal/g, fats 9 Cal/g and protein 4 Callg,a) how much energy did the patient consume? Round to the nearest one if necessary.b) what is the unit symbol for the answer?

SOLUTION

Write out the information given in the question

Protein meal contains

25g of carbohydrates, 18 g of protein, and 10 g of fat.

Second meal contains

15 g of carbohydrates.

oatmeal contains

48 g of carbohydrates, 16 g of protein, and 5 g of fat.

The total of each nutrient of each meal is

\begin{gathered} Carbohydrates=25g+15g+48g=88g \\ \text{Protein}=18g+16g=34g \\ \text{fats =10g+5g=15g} \end{gathered}

From the question, amount of energy contains in each nutrient is given as

\begin{gathered} \text{Carbohydrate}=4\text{ cal/g} \\ \text{Protein}=4\text{ cal/g} \\ \text{Fats =9 cal/g} \end{gathered}

Then, we obtain the calories in each of the nutrient.

Hence

For carbohydrates, we have

\begin{gathered} 1g\text{ contains 4cal} \\ 889\text{ will contains=88 }*4=352cal \end{gathered}

Then

For Proteins, we have

\begin{gathered} 1\text{ g contains 4 cal} \\ 34g\text{ will contains= 34}*4=136cal \end{gathered}

For fats, we have

\begin{gathered} 1g\text{ contains 9cal} \\ 15\text{g will contains =15}*9=135cal \end{gathered}

Hence

The total energy consume by the patient will be the sum of the energy consume from each nutirent, then

352\text{cal}+136\text{cal}+135\text{cal}=623\text{cal}

Hence

The energy consume by the patient is 623calories

The units calories(cal).
